A Phenomenological Study on the Experiences of Irritable Bowel Syndrome of High School Girls in Korea

Abstract

|
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine and better understand the effects of irritable bowel syndrome among high school girls in Korea and to explore the structure of this experience.
Method: Using the phenomenological methodology, data was collected using in depth interviews on six high school girls with irritable bowel syndrome and analyzed using Colaizzi¡¯s method.
Result: Six theme clusters were extracted; tendency to hiding GI (gastrointestinal) symptoms, discomfort due to repeat GI symptoms, reluctant to share their distress, vague, undesirable obstruction, comforts oneself.
Conclusion: These results provide an opportunity to better understand the experiences of high school girls with irritable bowel syndrome. It also serves as a medium for formulating appropriate nursing interventions for patients with irritable bowel syndrome.
